Short but sturdy walk Pico de las Nieves (4.4km - 2h20)
De walk Pico de las Nieves to Llanos de la Pez and back, starts just a stone's throw from Gran Canaria's highest peak (1956m) and loops past Refugio Díaz Bertrana (1740m) and then to Llanos de la Pez (1680m), where two idyllic picnic areas await you. The walk from Pico de las Nieves offers a trip through the beautiful shady coniferous forests of Gran Canaria. Along the route you can also enjoy breathtaking views of the landscape, including views of Roque Nublo and the surrounding mountains.
Parking along the track at Pico de las Nieves
We parked our rental car along the side of the road, near Pico de las Nieves, among the already present hikers seeking the highest point of Gran Canaria. Fortunately, we discovered a spot near the top, where we enjoyed a bag of freshly baked cookies at the local food truck. The road ends abruptly at Pico de las Nieves, but there is usually enough room to turn around by car. You can also choose to park at Llanos de la Pez and start the walk to Pico de las Nieves from there.
Challenging walking route to Llanos de la Pez
The route is marked by the well-known yellow lines, making both novice and experienced hikers feel comfortable. However, a word of caution is in order: the tendency to slip on fine pebbles during the descent requires vigilance, especially in the initial phase of the tour, when the terrain is steep and challenging. You follow the path down to the shelter, one Refuge. You still keep to the right there. About 700 meters further you arrive at Llanos de la Pez.
Rest stop at the Llanos de la Pez picnic area
Upon arrival at Llanos de la Pez (1680m), located along the GC-600, after 1h30min of walking it was time for a well-deserved little break and there was the opportunity for a relaxing picnic. It was still too early for us for lunch. Here we not only find toilet facilities, but also inviting picnic tables to enjoy a longer break. Drink plenty of water here, because the last part of the way back up to Pico de las Nieves can be a challenge.
The last steep part of the walk...
The last part of the loop walk Pico de la Nieves to Llanos de la Pez is characterized by steep slopes and the rugged nature of the path. Nevertheless, this final bit of challenge still offers the opportunity to enjoy the unspoilt natural splendor of Gran Canaria. On the last steep part of the walk we conquered 225m of elevation gain in about 40 minutes.
Visit to the mountain village of Tejeda
As we concluded our adventures in the enchanting village of Tejeda, where we enjoyed a delicious midday lunch on the terrace of the Sabores restaurant, we are eagerly looking forward to our next trip to Gran Canaria in April 2024. There we will undoubtedly discover new and even more enchanting routes... the adventure on this beautiful island will continue for a while.
